Slagel Knife At Work On A Big Alaskan Bull Moose
Several years ago, my brother-in-law gave me the tiny knife seen hanging around my neck. It is a small knife designed by Peyton for casterating calves. I was so impressed with that knife that I went to visit Peyton at his shop while visiting from Alaska.
While there, Peyton presented me with the Slagel, requesting that I test it out in Alaska.
The next fall, I killed a bull moose and field dressed it with the Slagel. About a week later, a local friend called me and asked for my assistance in field dressing a bull he had just caught. After that work was completed, I did the first video demonstrating that after only a few swipes on my trusty steel, the Slagel easily shaved hair off my arm. This is absolutely amazing as there is not a tougher hide on an animal in North America than a Yukon Bull Moose. The hair on the moose’s hide is incredibly hard on a knife’s edge.
Then, a year later, September 2023, I & friends caught a huge bull on a tributary of the Mighty Yukon River. Upon returning home after field dressing that brute, I made the second video showing the knife would again shave hair after a few swipes on the same steel. The knife has never touched a stone or sharpener other than the steel which simply ‘straightens’ the edge.
In my book, Peyton’s Slagel is absolutely the best knife I’ve ever seen. And I have a book.😎
